Abstract

In this paper, we explore some design guidelines for a user interface to improve the efficiency and effectiveness in browsing Web pages on the World Wide Web (WWW). Primarily, there are three aspects to be considered for developing those guidelines. The first one is the properties of Hyperlink and Hypermedia, the second is the cognitive limits of user, and the last one is the usability. Based on proposed guidelines, the Web pages are written in HTML and CGI as a practice: introducing the Department of Business Administration in Soochow University, which is served as an experimental tool. The results of the experiment indicate that most active subjects realize that the Web pages meet the requirements of usability, and also relieve their interferences suffered from the cognitive limits. Finally, the findings of this research are helpful in improving the performance of human-computer interaction on WWW.
