Abstract

Information and information management are very important in enabling enterprise integration. In order to manage the high volume of product data generated from iterative product R&D and to satisfy the high demand of data sharing among activities throughout product life cycle, information integration becomes very important in ensuring the consistency and correctness of product data throughout product life cycle. In addition to implement the necessary information technologies such as integrated database, network communication protocol, the product data model which is the basis of database establishment must be defined on the basis of an international product (model) data standard. Thus, all product data occurred in the product life cycle can be kept and, later, interpreted correctly in an integrated database. In this paper, an international standard for product data representation and exchange is introduced to be the core element of an worldwide product data management (PDM) pilot system. This research defines three main data models (e.g., product definition, product structure, engineering change and approval) using STEP-EXPRESS representation concept, and introduces the method of developing the PDM pilot system and integrated database using the object-oriented DBMS. To reduce the complexity of system implementation and improve the design of human-system interface, the word wide web (WWW) network technique is chosen to design the user-friendly interfaces for the PDM system. We express the STEP-based global data modeling concept for the realization of concurrent and consistent product data management.
