Abstract
This article traces the historical development of mediation as a means of informal dispute resolution in the East and the West. It surveys developments in many different countries. The author emphasizes the importance of ADR, especially mediation, and argues for a greater role for mediation in the future.

Tang Houzhi
Professor Tang Houzhi, Adjunct Professor in Law, City University of Hong Kong, is Adviser of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade/China Chamber of International Commerce’s Beijing Conciliation Centre; Arbitration Expert of the United Nations International Trade Centre; Former Court Member of the London Court of International Arbitration; Vice President of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (IFCAI) and Advisory Council Member of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). In 2003, he was awarded a first grade Royal Swedish Order in appreciation of his outstanding achievement in international commercial arbitration.
