Abstract
The origin of the connection between the fast and spiritual vision as described by Ephrem in his hymns On Fast is investigated. It is argued that the biblical context of Genesis 1–3, coupled with the polarity formed by Adam and Christ in Ephrem's theology, gave rise to the notion that it is possible to gain spiritual insight through the fast.
