Abstract
James 3:5–6 is a metaphor, viewing the tongue as a destructive fire. The analogy between the tongue and a fire is examined to assess the tertium comparationis of this metaphor. The article concludes that the resemblance stated between a tongue and a fire lies in the immensely destructive potential of the tongue (both for the individual and the community), the capability of a fire to destroy and to pollute and the negative origin of fire, through which the devil extends the boundaries of hell.
