Is Bellerophontes Josef?

Pages 110-117 | Published online: 05 Aug 2016

Abstract

In this paper a comparison is made between the mythological character Bellerophontes whose story was first told by Homer in the Iliad and the biblical figure Joseph, son of Jacob. A remarkable similarity between an episode in the life of both is analysed to show that a common primeval source most probably is the explanation of many corresponding stories in the histories of different civilizations.
