Abstract
The possible reasons for St. Ephrem's extensive use of the senses to describe Paradise in his ‘Hymns On Paradise’ are investigated. It is suggested that the focus on the bodily senses (paradoxically) serves to highlight the hidden nature of Paradise; that it is used by Ephrem to portray Paradise as a place of wonderful bliss; that it serves to emphasize that Paradise is a spiritual reality; and that it becomes an aid in encouraging a sober lifestyle since the recompensing value of Paradise is underlined by it.
