Abstract
In this paper Synesius' Hymn 3 is analysed as a philosophical hymn. It is established that it embraces a kernel of the Neoplatonic system within its structuring and content. After an introduction into philosophical hymnology, a translation of the hymn is provided. In the exposition attention is paid to the hymn's nature and reading as this relates to the poet's personal circumstances as well as to his philosophical depth. To do this numerous references to Plato are made.
