The gospels in the temporale of the Missale Romanum

Abstract

This study attempts to discern the principle underlying the selection of liturgical gospel readings in the Western service books. It concludes that the gospels outside the Christmas and Easter seasons are chosen from the Fourth Gospel in the latter part of Lent and after Easter, from Luke thereafter, until the Ember Days of September, and from Matthew for the rest of the year.
