Abstract
Broadly speaking, the Christus patiens adapts the contents of the passion and resurrection narrative in the canonical gospels to the mould of Euripidean drama. The messenger scene at lines 2173–2388, however. is only partly based upon Matthew 28:11–15, and differs from that source in remarkable ways. In this article these differences are analyzed, and the apocryphal Gospel of Peter is suggested and discussed as a possible source for the messenger scene in question.
