Abstract
The Church Fathers are neglected today, especially by the Christian Church which owes most to them. They are the link between the New Testament and present day Christianity. Especially in the areas of
(1) | liturgy expressing the actual faith of the believing community, | ||||
(2) | relations between church and state: subservience or challenge? | ||||
(3) | spirituality and theology: faith expressed in prayer, | ||||
(4) | theology and the problems of belief, | ||||
(5) | the interpretation of Scripture and especially of the Old Testament, the priority of Scripture in preaching and teaching and living |
the Fathers have ‘provided the ground plan for the development of theological ideas in the Church ever since’.
