A short note on John 1:17 in patristic exegesis

Pages 18-25 | Published online: 05 Aug 2016

Abstract

A vast number of patristic passages has been greatly influenced by John 1:17, and especially the contrasting words ó νóμος—ή άλήθεια, the Fathers perceiving this contrast in terms of the old versus the new, the types versus the reality in Christ. In this paper some of the more relevant texts are looked at, and in a final paragraph their possible relevance for a modern understanding of this verse is suggested.
