Oracles and prophecies in the Graeco-Roman world and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament

Abstract

This article discusses the popularity, place and nature of oracles and prophecies in Graeco-Roman times. Special attention is given to their relationship with signs and magic, which contributes decisively to their coercive nature. The political use and functions of oracles and prophecies, as well as the relevance of this material for interpreting the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, are analysed in the final part of the article.
