Abstract
In this article, using updated research information from 1995-1996, the author examines motives for learning and objectives of teaching Russian as a foreign language at university level in South Africa. This paper reveals new insights into previously determined objectives of learning Russian Language, Literature and Culture. The author identifies new tendencies in initial students' motives and demonstrates the necessity of creating an alternative comprehensive study model in terms of a proposed semesterisation and modularisation system of teaching foreign languages at UNISA. Based upon the research findings, recommendations are made to address students' motivation and expectations.
