Abstract
This paper examines variation in Zulu in the Greater Durban Area (GDA). Certain social networks are identified and the language varieties generated by these networks are examined. The social context and function of the language varieties spoken in eduational institutions, isiGura, in shebeens, isiThaveni, and by soccer enthusiasts, isiNgura are analysed. Some recommendations are made regarding the relationship of these non-standard varieties to Standard Zulu.
