Abstract

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has been widely used in fluids analysis. In view of this, the present study has been carried out to adapt the image processing method into geotechnical engineering. This paper discusses the application of image processing method by MatPIV into measuring and observing the profile for soil displacement under various loadings and shape of the foundation. In carrying out the MatPIV analysis, cross-correlation method is applied to detect the difference of pixels in a window for the soil particles in an image. Besides, a prototype is used to validate the suitability of MatPIV in the study. The validation test shows a slight error of 4.2% for a known displaced measurement. This justifies the suitability for adapting MatPIV into soil displacement measurement. The observed experimental results agree well with the theoretical for the displacement of soil under structured loading.
