Novel application of a fibre optic-based train weigh-in-motion system in railway

Abstract

A fibre optic-based train weigh-in-motion system using Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors was implemented in a railway system. The purpose of the system is for real-time train vibration and wheel load monitoring. Using an FBG sensor in railway is a novel application. A method for bridging experimentation and practical use is established.

Mr Ken K. Yuen is a Rolling Stock Maintenance Engineer in the MTR Corporation. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Hong Kong in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He joined the MTR Corporation as a Graduate Engineer in 2009. He is currently working on developing different train condition monitoring systems using new technology. He is also responsible for rolling stock-related growth businesses and new lines/extensions operation readiness.
