Foreword

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers has organised the HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers on an annual basis since 2006. The principal aim has been to encourage young engineers and researchers aged 35 or below to publish their work and advance in their professional fields. The competition also serves as a platform for young engineers and researchers worldwide to share their accomplishments, and to promote engineering among the young generation in general.

We are delighted to have received an encouraging number of high-quality submissions this year, and three outstanding papers have been selected from six shortlisted papers for this year's Award. We were impressed by the quality of all the papers and we decided to publish the three awarded papers and the three shortlisted papers in this special issue. By publishing these selected papers, we hope to showcase the remarkable achievement of the participating authors to our fellow members and readers.

All the papers are accessible online on the Taylor & Francis Platform. This is a special benefit offered to our members and subscribers, to enhance the exposure of the Award and allow the accomplishments of the participating authors to reach a wider global readership.

On behalf of the Institution, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Panel of Judges for their contributions, and to all the entrants for their participation.

We also look forward to receiving more outstanding submissions from around the globe in the next round. More details on next year's competition can be viewed at http://hkie.org.hk/en/news/award_event/.
