Abstract
Calculations are presented for backscattering spectrometers under consideration for the ESS. In particular, novel instrumentation concepts such as pulse-shaping choppers and ballistic guides are considered. Instruments covering energy resolutions from 1 to 10 w eV are presented and their expected performance at the ESS is compared to existing instruments. For w eV energy resolutions, the combination of a coupled moderator and a pulse-shaping chopper is shown to perform well compared to the conventional poisoned-moderator instrument.
