Abstract

The hydrogen-bond formation between alcohols and N,N-dimethylformamide in carbon tetrachloride is studied at 298 K using FTIR spectroscopy. The formation constant for 1:1 complexes has been calculated using the Nash method. The formation constant and free energy change increases with the increase in carbon chain length of the alcohols, which suggests that the degree of complex formation varies with the carbon chain length of alcohols in the order of 1-butanol<1-pentanol<1-hexanol<1-heptanol<1-octanol<1-decanol. The integrated intensity and the change in bond moment on stretching are also discussed.
