Abstract
Following die approach of the sociology of knowledge, the idea of serious leisure is analyzed contextually according to its place in society, culture, and history using a paradigm designed by Robert Merton for this purpose. Such an analysis not only broadens understanding of the idea under scrutiny, but also shows its limitations, thereby setting an agenda for eliminating them. It is hoped that the present examination of the idea of serious leisure will set the stage for similar examinations of other main concepts and conceptual applications in leisure studies.
