Debate: Players' Share of Sports Revenues

THE DECLINING PLAYER SHARE OF AFL CLUBS AND LEAGUE REVENUE, 2001–2009: WHERE HAS THE MONEY GONE?

Abstract

The analysis in this paper focuses on trends in the sources of Australian Football League (club and league) revenue and where that money is spent, and reinforces Dabscheck's (2012) general conclusion of the relatively small share (by international standards) of total revenue of major Australian sports leagues going to players. Examining where the rest of the money goes might give us some future insight into helping to explain why the players' share of revenue in Australia is so low, at least in the AFL.
