Notes

This article was originally accepted for publication in 1991. Much of the research upon which this article is based was funded by the Australian Research Grants Committee; the assistance (and persistence) of Marilyn Orr as well as of Lee Beness is much appreciated. The Loma Hodgkinson Sunshine Home graciously provided copies of what documentary material is held there on Hodgkinson's life, including two sets of biographical notes by Dr Distin Morgan and Ms Carole Wang. The National Council of Women of New South Wales kindly granted access to their records in the Mitchell Library. The Australian Dictionary of Biography forwarded details from Hodgkinson's birth and death certificates and a list of relevant newspaper items. Judy Washington of the Local History Unit of Lane Cove Municipal Council Library made a special search of the Lane Cove Council records on the Gore Hill property, while John Mackinolty traced its Certificate of Title in the Land Titles Office of New South Wales. Keith Fisher of the Sydney Theosophical Society searched their records of membership and made some valuable suggestions.
