The legend of James Brown

Abstract

This paper analyses a series of accounts of a ‘frontier incident’ involving the South Australian settler, James Brown. In examining how the story evolved over time, we gain an insight into the way in which popular memory of the incident was shaped by the ‘pioneer legend’.
