GIS Education in China

The development of GIS offers new possibilities for university geography in China. Being new, GIS has also aroused interest in other departments related to geography. The universities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have played important roles in the development and implementation of GIS in teaching, research and applications. The compilation of GIS textbooks in Chinese and the training of GIS manpower were important factors making this change possible. Without homeproduced textbooks, however, it would have been slow to introduce GIS in geography education at university level. In some universities in China, GIS has brought about a major change in the teaching of geography too. The integration of GIS into geography teaching in China is on the way.
