Research on geography textbooks in the United States

Pages 63-67 | Published online: 10 May 2010

This article reviews research on geography textbooks in the United States. Geography, as part of the social studies, is a component of textbook content but has attracted little research interest. Textbook research trends in history and the social studies in general are summarised, followed by an assessment of research in and evaluation of geography textbooks. A preliminary research agenda related to the implementation of Geography for Life: The National Geography Standards (1994), geography and textbooks is proposed. The effect of education politics in determining textbook content in the US is suggested as a keyfocus.
