The ecosystem approach to the development of a school AtlasFootnote1

Pages 68-71 | Published online: 10 May 2010

It is argued that the ecosystem model of geography is one admirably suited to the needs of educators, particularly of those teaching in secondary schools. It is also a model which is favoured by many geographers, and though it cannot deal with the totality of the problems that geographers tackle, it is particularly suited to the understanding of environmental and spatial problems. To this end it has been adopted in the pre‐service preparation of teachers in the Province of Quebec in Canada. In order to help teachers, a textbook‐atlas based on the ecosystem model was developed by a team based at Laval University. The various stages of the conception and production of the Inter Atlas are described.
