Abstract
About 90% of district medical officers in Cameroon are graduates of the University Center for Health Sciences. The institution was created in 1969 for the integrated multiprofessional training of health care personnel along multidisciplinary lines with a strong public health orientation, and over the years it has undergone many changes affecting its basic philosophy. In this article, I briefly describe the program, with emphasis on how it prepares physicians to be district medical officers. I make proposals for the program reorientation in light of criticisms about suboptimal performance of graduates in the domain of public health.
