Fundamental Study of Hall Element Method to Detect Ball Motion in Ball Bearings

Pages 66-73 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

A fundamental study regarding the relation between a magnetized ball and Hall voltage was carried out to prepare basic data for the Hall element method used for detecting three-dimensional ball motion in ball bearings. It was found that the accuracy of Hall element method largely depended on the uniformity of the magnetization of a ball. Therefore, the magnetizing method is very important to make a uniformly magnetized ball. As far as the magnetizing method is concerned, the uniformity was improved considerably by employing the non-contact method in compared with the contact method. The effects of contact angle on Hall voltage were also examined. It was found that contact angle naturally affects Hall voltage. It decreased with each increment of contact angle. A mathematical model was proposed to account for the experimental results, which led a simple expression.
