Abstract

Feasibility of the observation of two-dimensional binary images of wear debris for detecting the change of wear conditions is studied. Identification and comparison of wear debris are quantitatively carried out using numerical parameters and statistical analysis. Wear tests are run to produce various kinds of wear debris. The images of wear debris from wear tests are captured with image acquisition equipment. By thresholding, two-dimensional binary images of wear debris are made and, then, morphological parameters are used to quantify the images of debris. Analysis of variance is applied to determine which morphological parameters are significantly affected by the difference in wear conditions. It is shown that some morphological parameters of two-dimensional binary images of wear debris can statistically indicate the distinction of wear conditions.
