Abstract

The soap fiber structure of ester-based lithium soap grease influences its tribological performance such as friction and wear, so that the effect of the producing conditions of ester-based lithium soap grease on the fiber length was investigated. Decreasing the soap concentration or increasing the cooling rate could produce long fiber grease. In contrast, short fiber grease could be produced by increasing the soap concentration or raising the cooling rate, since the growth of soap fiber in cooling process was restricted in very short time for high concentration or high cooling greases. In addition, keeping grease at a temperature fluctuating near the dissolution temperature of soap or heat retention process was effective in promoting the growth of soap fiber. Especially the addition of soap powder to grease in the heat retention process brought about the generation of gigantic fibers.
