Scuffing Behavior of Piston-Pin/Bore Bearing in Mixed Lubrication—Part I: Experimental Studies

Abstract

A bench rig is designed and constructed to determine the scuffing and seizure mechanisms and threshold conditions of journal bearings, and to investigate the effects of surface roughness, clearance, circumferential groove, oil temperature, and oil feeding rate on scuffing. It can be used for four different operating and loading cases: constant journal speed and static load; constant speed and dynamic load; journal oscillation and static load; journal oscillation and dynamic load. Simulations of time-dependent dynamic load and the pin surface velocity over a complete engine cycle are accomplished mainly by a combination of cam-driven mechanical springs and an oscillator. Production pistons and piston pins are used as samples. The scuffing load and bulk temperature are measured to characterize the scuffing behavior.
