The Lubricating Properties of Tribo-Coating Films of Pb-Sn Alloys in High Vacuum

Abstract

The lubricating properties of “tribo-coating” films of Pb-Sn alloys with various compositions were studied in a vacuum of 10−6 Pa. The ring specimen was coated by tribo-coating which forms an adhesive transfer film by pressing a film material onto the rotating substrate.

It was found that good lubricating films were formed by tribo-coating at a certain Pb-Su alloy composition and a certain load-velocity combination. The film of 50Pb-50Sn (weight percent) alloy, which is approximately 12 percent apart from the eutectic point composition (39Pb-62Sn weight percent), showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.10 to 0.29) and the longest life (7 × 104 cycles).
