Abstract

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of an ungrooved big-end bearing are calculated. Effects of small misalignment in such bearings are also examined. Navier-Stokes equations for the flow-field in the bearing are solved using Galerkin's finite element approach. The computed results include bearing center orbits, variation of the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure. The results we compared with those of a grooved bearing. The Ruston-Hornsby 6 VEB-X Mk-III engine big-end bearing is selected as an example for calculation and comparison of results.
