Consumption of Antioxidant of Turbine Oil in Service Unit

Pages 51-58 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

It is known that the antioxidants which are used to maintain the quality of turbine oil are “sacrificed” additives. That is, they cause a chemical reaction and undergo a change in quality while they are performing their function during use. However, there has been no detailed systematic investigation of this phenomenon.

In this study, using steam turbine oil with 2,6-di-tert-butyl p-cresol (DBPC) and gas turbine oil with aromatic amines, we have identified the degradation products, investigated the degradation mechanism of the antioxidants, and simulated their consumption pattern. The results of a quality monitoring method that has been established based on this information are reported; this method utilizes the antioxidant concentration, which has a high correlation with the life span of turbine oil.
