Abstract

In this paper, a new type of floating ring gas bearing in which a “floating ring” is combined with an “orifice-annular and shallow-pocket” gas bearing is introduced. The stability of this new type of floating ring gas journal bearing is theoretically analyzed by use of the modified 8-stiffness and damping coefficients method. The variation of the dimensionless critical mass of the rotor with a clearance ratio C2/C1, mass ratio m2/m1, given ring speed ratio ω21, supply pressure Ps, eccentricity ratio of inner film ε1 and width ratio of the shallow-pocket (l/L)u is presented. The variations of the dimensionless load capacity of this type of gas bearing with the above-mentioned parameters are also given.
