Abstract

A plot of mangrove soil in Guadeloupe (FRANCE) was polluted with BAL crude oil in order to investigate the PAH weathering. After an eight years' period, high resolution GC-MS analysis demonstrates that two and three ring aromatic compounds are significantly altered in a medium reducing biotope and can be used as weathering indicators for monitoring the degradation degree of petroleum. On the contrary, four ring PAHs (steroids) can be choosen as origin markers for tracking oil spill.
