Abstract

Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been performed using a new focused microwave (FMW) open-vessel system. The experimental conditions were optimised (power, time, solvent…). This new technique of extraction was then applied to several standard reference materials (sediment, air particulate matter). The results, which were obtained, show a good extraction efficiency (greater than 85%) when comparing concentrations to the certified values. The great improvements of this technique, compared to other extraction ones, are the small volume of the extraction solvent needed to perform the extraction (few dozens of mL) and the drastic reduction of the extraction time (10 minutes).
