Abstract
James Gibson introduced affordances as a basic notion in his approach to perception. Several formalizations of this concept have been proposed. However, none of the formalizations so far is universally accepted. In this article we propose a new formalization of the concept of affordances within situation theory. Our approach follows closely the descriptions of Gibson, especially the nature of affordances as concepts located neither in the individual nor in the environment. In addition, we extend our theory by some dynamics initialized by an individual performing an action.
