USE OF SLOTS TO ENHANCE FORCED CONVECTIVE COOLING BETWEEN CHANNELS WITH SURFACE-MOUNTED HEAT SOURCES

Abstract

Heat transfer enhancement because of the use of slots in channels with six uniformly surface-mounted blocks simulating electronic packages was numerically studied. Consideration was given to steady two-dimensional laminar flow. Reynolds numbers (Re) of 100?1000 were considered. Two block heights (h / d = 0.25 and 0.5) and two slot sizes (e / d = 0.05 and 0.1) were considered. Three different slot configurations also were considered: case 1, slot to the left of the cavity; case 2, slot in the center of the cavity; and case 3, slot to the right of the cavity. The governing equations along withthe boundary conditions were solved using a finite volume technique. Based on the grid independence studies, 300 x 36 nonuniformly spaced grid lines were used in x and y directions, respectively. The cooling performance of slotted channels was compared with the baseline case (without slots). Calculations showed that enhancement in heat transfer occurred, but not without the cost of a great increase in pressure drop. Of the three slot configurations case 3 (slot to the right of the cavity) performs best. Cooling performance improved with an increase in slot size.
