Abstract

Numerical study of temperature of rotating continuous casting roll has been done using the computational fluid dynamics method. Radiation view factor for roll-slab configuration is analytically derived. Internal cooling effects of ring-gap roll and center-bored roll are compared and analyzed under normal operation condition and slab stoppage situations. Simulated results reveal a three-dimensional feature of the temperature field at roll ends, and indicate that for the ring-gap roll local boiling occurs most likely in end regions of the cooling channel. The developed calculation model, together with mechanical calculation, provides an optimizing tool for casting roll design.
