Abstract

The energy transfer and surface modification of a metal surface have been studied theoretically during pulsed laser heating. The resulting shape of the deformed surface depends on the laser power, healing time, and diameter. The incident laser power is assumed to have a Gaussian distribution in the radial direction and is absorbed in the region very close to the surface. The energy first diffuses by conduction in the radial and axial directions. Then, when the temperature exceeds the melting temperature, a liquid is formed that flows outward, and the surface deforms. The deformation varies with time, and the peak deformation is proportional to the laser power.
