ABSTRACT

Comparisons between different types of formulations for the heat and mass transfer processes occurring in rotary regenerators are documented. Simulation results of a general two-dimensional mathematical model, including diffusion in the matrix as a localized process, are compared with the data obtained with its one-dimensional counterpart. This one-dimensional model is shown to be derived from the original two-dimensional formulation through an averaging procedure. The results presented suggest that the one-dimensional formulation can be used in desiccant wheel applications, whereas for enthalpy exchangers the more robust two-dimensional formulation is needed for certain design and operating parameters.
