Abstract
In many engineering problems it is required to find the heat flux perpendicular to an arbitrary contour. In this article, a general procedure is introduced for calculating the heat flux perpendicular to any given contour by using the calculated temperature field of finite-element method (FEM) output. The accuracy of such a calculation is the same as that of the FEM analysis itself. An example is presented comparing the results calculated according to the suggested procedure to an analytical solution of the same problem. The most commonly used approximation is also given.
