THE MONTE CARLO METHOD APPLIED TO GASES WITH SPECTRAL LINE STRUCTURE

Pages 273-284 | Received 25 Nov 1991, Accepted 14 Jan 1992, Published online: 30 Mar 2007

Abstract

The necessary statistical relationships have been developed for the application of the Monte Carlo method to radiative heat transfer within nongray media, including molecular gases that have rapidly gyrating absorption coefficients. The statistical narrow-band model is applied to obtain the necessary random-number relationships for wavelength of emission and for absorption path length. It is observed that absorption path lengths are considerably different, depending on whether emission is from a surface or from within the medium. The Monte Carlo approach is verified by comparison with “exact” wideband model results for a few cases for which such “exact” results are easily obtainable.
