Abstract
A specific section of the teaching and lecturing staff in one county of England was surveyed in an attempt to discover how it had been trained in the past and what type of training courses would be needed in the future. Falling under the heading of ‘Commercial Studies’, these teachers can be described as ‘members of the county's teaching force who, by virtue of their appointment, teach the subjects of Shorthand, Typewriting or Office Practice as part, or as the whole of their normal teaching duties’. This paper considers the response to the survey which showed that enhanced education and training opportunities for Commercial Studies staff within the county in question are long overdue. The paper also asks if this situation pertains throughout the rest of the United Kingdom, and establishes a need for further research and investigation.
