Abstract
The article begins by defining the term profession, and this is followed by discussing some of the problems associated with the available definitions. Next the characteristics of a profession are related to the task of teaching. A number of sources which accord professional status to teaching are cited and a number taking a contrary view are also cited. The article ends by relating teaching to a checklist of the characteristics of a profession and some conclusions are reached.
