Essential Oil Composition of Bothriochloa bladhi

Abstract

The essential oil composition of Bothriochloa bladhi (Retz.) S.T. Blake, an aromatic fodder grass from Palampur (Himachal Pradesh), was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The major constituents characterized were isoamyl hexanoate (33.2%), isovaleric acid (7.2%), propyl hexanoate (3.5%) and camphor (2.1%). The oil was devoid of acorenone-B and differs from the oils produced from other regions with respect to the sesquiterpenoid content. The chemical composition also revealed that the major categories are long chain esters (41.6%) and oxygenated monoterpens (10.9%). High concentration of isoamyl hexanoate and absence of acorenone-B, intermediol, neointermedeol in the oil makes the grass as a distinct chemo-variant of the species reported so far.
