Integrative review on ethnobotany, essential oil, phytochemical, agronomy, molecular and pharmacological properties of Satureja species

ABSTRACT

Satureja is one of the important medicinal and aromatic genus of the Lamiaceae family due to the high valuable phenolic compounds, such as carvacrol and thymol, which is produced by the plants. It is considered as an important potential source of nutrient and valuable components thus, can serve to control some diseases such as antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer and cytotoxic effects. Essential oil and their constituents obtained from Satureja, have several applications as natural agents in maintaining the proper qualifications of food. The present review discusses on the ethnobotany, essential oil, aroma profile, agronomy, molecular studies and pharmacological activities accomplished so far. This assessment is mostly focusing to be responsible for related data on the phytochemical of Satureja species, with highlighting on aroma profile of the essential oil, providing information aimed at choosing the powerful accessions with the greatest aroma profiles and pharmacological activity.
