Hyde refers to Legba, a Yoruba trickster that survived the “middle passage” into African American folk tales, as a “cosmic linguist” who “translates among the spheres” (1998, p. 259). Henry Louis Gates, Jr., describes Legba as “the guiding force of interpretation itself” (1988, p. 23).
